A community project brought SteamOS to Apple Silicon Macs, opening a new route for playing Windows PC games on macOS. The setup uses FX Steam Launcher, a free tool that runs Valve’s ARM64 SteamOS inside a virtual machine.

The development matters since Mac users have long lacked an easy way to access the wider PC gaming library. The launcher combines SteamOS, Proton, x86-to-ARM translation and Vulkan-to-Metal conversion to make Windows titles run on Apple hardware.

ETA Prime Puts it to the Test

YouTuber ETA Prime tested the setup on a MacBook Pro powered by Apple’s M4 Max chip. The machine carried a 14-core CPU, a 32-core GPU and 36 GB of unified memory.

The Witcher 3 delivered the most notable result. The game ran at more than 70 FPS at 1080p with High settings, a level of performance that suggests serious gaming potential on high-end Apple Silicon.

The result is impressive, but the project remains experimental. ETA Prime reported a tree-rendering bug in The Witcher 3, while several other games failed to launch or showed visual issues.

Strong Performance, Early Limits

Shader-compilation stutter also affected some titles. These problems reflect the complexity of running Windows games through multiple translation layers inside a virtual machine. ETA Prime advised at least 24 GB of RAM for demanding games. Systems with 16 GB may still handle lighter titles, but users should expect uneven results across the Steam library.

The test does not make SteamOS an official Mac platform. Valve has not announced native SteamOS support for Apple Silicon, and FX Steam Launcher remains an active development project.
