The United States has extended its sanctions waiver for Russian seaborne crude by one month. This move could temporarily ease global oil supply pressure and offer short-term stability to volatile energy markets. The decision comes at a time when crude prices remain elevated amid the West Asia tensions.
The extension allows select countries to continue importing Russian crude carried by sea, especially cargoes already in transit. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the 30-day license is aimed at ensuring that ‘vulnerable countries can access Russian oil cargoes stranded at sea and stabilise the physical crude market.’
Global oil benchmarks remain firm, with Brent crude trading near $111 per barrel as West Asia tensions and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to grab headlines.
In international markets, especially in India, fuel prices have increased twice in less than a week after a long freeze on revisions. Earlier, oil companies raised rates by Rs. 3 per liter on May 15, marking the first major upward shift in four years. The latest hikes have raised concerns over sustained inflationary pressure if crude stays above current levels.
The one-month waiver offers only limited relief in a market driven by geopolitical instability instead of supply fundamentals. Rising Brent prices and regional conflict risks can quickly neutralize these gains. The fuel pricing trajectory now hinges less on domestic policy and more on external shocks, especially in West Asia, where supply disruptions can trigger immediate retail-level adjustments.
