Students across the UAE will return to classrooms on August 31 for the 2026-27 academic year. As AI becomes part of school education, students will also face a more practical question: how should they use it for their studies?
AI has been introduced as a formal subject across UAE public schools from kindergarten to Grade 12. Schools are also taking different approaches to generative AI tools. Some allow supervised use, while others limit access to approved platforms.
The useful question for students is simple. Is AI helping them learn, or is it completing the task for them?
Here are five ways students can use AI effectively.
Students can ask AI to explain a difficult topic in simpler language. They can also ask for another example or request a step-by-step explanation.
For instance, a student struggling with photosynthesis can ask for a Grade 8 explanation with a simple real-life example. The tool can then ask questions to check whether the student has understood the concept.
Reading highlighted notes can feel like revision without showing what a student actually remembers. AI can turn a student's own notes into a quiz instead.
Students can ask for questions one at a time and answer them without seeing the solution first. This gives them a clearer picture of which topics they know and which ones need more work.
When homework gets difficult, students can tell AI not to solve the problem. They can share their working and ask for one hint about the next step.
This approach is especially useful in maths and science. Students can also ask why a particular step is needed before continuing with the problem themselves.
AI can also work as a critic rather than a ghostwriter. Students can write their own essay, report or presentation and ask the tool to identify weak areas.
For language work, AI can point out where grammatical mistakes occur without correcting every sentence. For maths, it can identify the first point where a calculation goes wrong.
A revision plan works better when students know what they actually struggle with. AI can test them on several topics first and then help build a study plan around the weaker areas.
For parents, this offers a useful test for AI use at home. If the tool helps a child understand, practise and correct mistakes, it is supporting learning. If it simply produces the homework, the learning task has shifted from the student to the machine.
