WhatsApp is rolling out new security features designed to make account takeovers harder and give users more information when dealing with unfamiliar callers. Meta announced the updates on August 25, with three major changes covering two-step verification, passkeys and unknown calls.
The new update by WhatsApp features two-step verification by going past the current six-digit PINs. This means that users can now set passwords that are longer and contain letters, digits, and special characters.
With the added authentication factor, it would be difficult for a third party to hack into your account even if he/she manages to get your one-time password. The added complexity in the form of a password will definitely make your account safer from any attacks. This is one of the best security measures offered by WhatsApp. Those who are using PINs should switch to passwords.
WhatsApp is also expanding passkey support. Users can now add more than one passkey to a single account, which is particularly useful for people who switch between Android and iOS devices.
Recently, Meta introduced Strict Account Settings as a means of safeguarding users from potential cyberattacks. In this scenario, it is likely that the features of some accounts will be restricted while some contacts will be blocked automatically.
By using enhanced verification, passkeys, and caller information, WhatsApp allows its users to secure themselves. Additionally, it has guaranteed to continue to provide solutions for protecting accounts through end-to-end encryption.
The passkeys allow a user to log in through different methods such as fingerprints, Face ID, and device lockscreen passcodes.
