Abu Dhabi opened the 6G Summit in the AI Era on Monday, October 19. It is billed as the first event of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) is organizing the two-day summit with Forum Global and Khalifa University. It takes place at Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers.
Regulators, technology companies, and global research groups are attending. The people who write spectrum and licensing rules will sit alongside those who build the networks. The goal is to set the technical and regulatory plan for 6G, with AI at the center of how future networks are built and run.
The official program includes a keynote by TDRA Director General Majed Sultan Al Mesmar on the UAE’s vision for an AI-enabled 6G future. A closed UAE 6G Committee meeting and an innovation and demonstrations showcase are also on the schedule. Key themes include AI-native networks, satellite connectivity, spectrum and standards, security and sustainability.
According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), preparations for 6G are speeding up. The UAE is building on its lead in 5G and 5G-Advanced networks, which WAM calls a base for the move to 6G.
The summit also comes as AI plays a bigger role in network design and management. Global efforts to set technical standards are growing too.

Nothing changes on phones today. The announcement covers preparation and standards work only. It gives no 6G launch date, trial, or spectrum plan. Any firm commitments would have to come from the sessions themselves. The agenda points to AI-run networks and satellite links as major topics.
Telecom firms and device makers will watch the outcome closely, since early standards shape future phones and networks. For now, the UAE’s 5G and 5G-Advanced networks remain the ones people use. The summit runs through Tuesday, October 20, so more details may emerge soon.
