Apple has rejected reports that claim iPhones and other devices could be restricted if customers miss payments under its new Apple Upgrade Program. The company clarified that users will continue to have full access to their devices even if payments are delayed.
Earlier rumors suggested that Apple was developing a ‘Restricted Mode’ that could limit device functions for not meeting payment obligations. The company said no such feature will be introduced under the program.
A speculation started when a report by 9to5Mac stated that the ‘App Managed Feature’ was in the latest iOS 27 beta. The feature was linked to possible checks on financed devices by Apple’s financial partners. The report suggested that Apple was working on a system that could restrict access to most applications if a customer fell behind on payments.
However, the device would have access only to essential apps such as Phone, Settings, Clock, Wallet, and the App Store. The report raised concerns among users that Apple could remotely limit users' devices after missed payments.
Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery said, “There will be no restricted mode, and/or there will be no limitations put on device functionality due to missed payments or defaults with the Apple upgrade program.” The company said payment issues will be managed through existing financing and lease termination rules. Customers will continue using their devices without any software restrictions.
Under the program, missed payments are added to the next month’s payment cycle. Klarna, which handles financing for the program, does not charge late fees for missed payments. If a customer misses three consecutive payments, Klarna can end the lease, and the user may need to pay the remaining balance after the device value is adjusted once it is returned. However, Apple will not control devices after missed payments, but it could still affect a customer’s credit score under normal financing rules.
