

Apple has cleared a major regulatory hurdle in China after receiving approval to launch Apple Intelligence there. The clearance allows the iPhone maker to introduce its AI-powered features to Chinese users through partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu. The move marks an important milestone for Apple as it looks to regain momentum in one of its biggest markets.
The Cyberspace Administration of China has officially registered Apple Intelligence, and Apple can now launch its generative AI services in mainland China. The approval comes after several months of regulatory scrutiny. This comes as China is stringent about all AI products used by customers in the country and requires them to comply with regulations.
Apple is yet to announce a launch date for its generative AI services in China. The partnerships allow Apple to offer AI services while adhering to China's data localization and content regulations, which restrict the use of foreign AI models.
Looking ahead, Apple has tied up with two prominent Chinese tech companies to comply with Chinese regulations. The Qwen large language model from Alibaba will provide AI services to Apple Intelligence on devices like iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro.
Apple was already having stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers that have been using sophisticated AI features on their phones. With its late entry into the market, Apple Intelligence put the tech giant at a disadvantage.
Approval is very timely for Apple. The company just announced a strong recovery in China, with iPhone shipments up more than 24 percent from the previous year in the second quarter. It is expected that Apple Intelligence will motivate many people to change their phones to compete with Huawei, among others.
China remains one of Apple's most critical markets, but it is also among the most tightly regulated for AI services. By securing approval and partnering with Alibaba and Baidu, Apple has established a path to deliver AI features that comply with local regulations without compromising its broader AI strategy.
