The long-running rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk has flared up once again. This time, the dispute centers on SpaceX's proposed orbital data centers and comes amid Apple's legal case against OpenAI over alleged trade secret violations.

This time around, Altman’s comments were provoked by Musk reviving one of his regular taunts, referring to Altman as ‘Scam Altman’ on X in retaliation for the legal case against OpenAI from Apple. Instead of responding with another personal attack, Altman questioned whether Musk really intended to launch data centers in orbit anytime soon, as that sounded like an investor pitch.

Sam Altman Questions Musk's SpaceX Claims as AI Rivalry Escalates

Altman argued that Musk appeared to be promoting ambitious short-term goals to investors. Altman did not accuse the latter of any misconduct but raised questions about the plan's feasibility and timeliness.

According to various reports, Altman's comments address the high expectations surrounding SpaceX's plans to build infrastructure. In turn, Musk fired back another personal jab without addressing the technical part of the problem. This online war of words attracted considerable attention from the technology sector, since both executives head companies in the AI segment that require additional infrastructure solutions.

Investment bank UBS further explained, “As such, the ability to scale compute in (space) orbit is less dependent on chip performance and more dependent on how efficiently heat can be rejected per unit mass and surface area.”

Future Outlook: Years of Competition Continue

The latest exchange reflects a rivalry that has expanded far beyond OpenAI. Having left OpenAI in 2018, Musk has questioned OpenAI's path amid legal challenges and criticisms and has created competitive AI firms. Altman has responded publicly to Musk's allegations.

Their most recent dispute comes at a time of increasing competition for AI infrastructure, funding, and technological leadership. With AI firms trying to construct greater computational capacity, debates about funding, execution, and vision have become as important as the technology itself.
