Archive of Our Own, better known as AO3, went offline after an extended maintenance shutdown. The platform’s operator now expects the fanfiction site to remain unavailable for roughly two to four weeks.

The Organization for Transformative Works, or OTW, runs AO3. It took the site down on October 29 for maintenance that was initially expected to last about 12 hours. The organization later extended the timeline after finding that recovery work required more time.

Data Appears Safe

OTW has not explained what triggered the outage. Reports indicate that AO3’s stored data remains intact, which should reassure writers and readers worried about losing their work.

The organization did not confirm whether the shutdown stems from a security issue. Some reports have linked the incident to a possible security investigation, but AO3 has not verified those claims.

Limited Access May Return First

Fans may not have to wait the full period to use the site again. OTW says it hopes to restore AO3 in a limited or 'degraded' state before full service returns.

That early version could restrict some features or operate in read-only mode. The organization has also warned that AO3 may need further unplanned downtime while engineers complete the recovery process.

Fans Face a Long Wait

AO3 hosts millions of fan-created stories and serves as a central hub for fandom communities worldwide. An outage of this length has left writers unable to post updates and readers unable to access saved works.

For now, users should treat any early return as temporary. OTW will need to confirm when AO3 has returned to normal, fully functional service.
