The UAE has introduced a leadership program for AI within its National Experts Program, with the aim of supporting the nation's AI Strategy 2031. This represents a strategic shift in focus towards practical implementation. Through this program, the UAE aims to build a strong pipeline of Emirati leaders skilled in leveraging AI.

NEP-AI Targets Talent and Delivery Gap

H.E. Ahmed Al Shamsi, Director of the National Experts Program, said, “The launch comes as the UAE government advances plans to become the first nation globally to adopt agentic AI  models within the next two years. Unlike traditional systems, agentic AI is capable of independently executing tasks and managing complex processes. NEP-AI focuses on developing leaders who can manage these systems responsibly, within critical operational environments.”

The AI program, called the NEP-AI, focuses on filling a vital need for leadership and practical knowledge in AI. The participants of this program include promising professionals who will be trained to develop strategic and operational skills. The program will include mentoring sessions as well as hands-on experience. Its primary objective is to transform AI strategies into results.

NEP-AI will cover the entire AI value chain, including the development of infrastructure and advanced AI systems. The program will focus heavily on developing enterprise applications and products as well. It will include use cases for the implementation of AI within priority industries.

Building Sovereign AI Capabilities

A core pillar of the initiative is sovereignty. The UAE aims for more autonomy when it comes to controlling its AI stack, which covers everything from data to models. NEP-AI contributes to this goal through fostering leaders who possess expertise in both technical and regulatory aspects. It fits into the broader strategy of ensuring cybersecurity and reducing dependency on other nations.

Global AI competition is rapidly increasing. Nations are increasingly allocating resources to develop computing power, talent, and regulations. UAE realises that talent shortage continues to be the challenge. By accelerating leadership development, it aims to maintain an advantage in innovation and strategy execution.
