Every year, a handful of games reach the end of the road. Sometimes the writing is on the wall for months, while other times the announcement catches players completely off guard. Either way, server shutdowns remain one of the hardest realities of modern gaming.

2026 will also see several notable titles disappear for good. Some have been around for years and built loyal communities, while others belong to major franchises with millions of fans. Once the support ends, players will lose access to online features, and in some cases, the games.

Major Online Games Nearing Permanent Shutdown

LET IT DIE

LET IT DIE launched in 2016. The action game mixed punishing combat, bizarre characters, and a strange post-apocalyptic world that worked perfectly together.

The game never became a mainstream phenomenon. A dedicated community kept it alive for years, returning again and again to climb the Tower of Barbs and hunt for better gear.

After nearly a decade online, that journey is coming to an end. For longtime players, the shutdown marks the end of one of gaming's most memorable cult classics.

NBA 2K25

Every new version of NBA 2K ultimately pushes away older versions, with no online support available in the long run. NBA 2K25 is facing the same issue. As soon as servers shut down, players will not be able to play in online mode and use My TEAM mode. Players can still access the game offline.

Battlefield Hardline

Battlefield Hardline was always an outlier in the Battlefield series. Rather than depicting military engagements, the title gave players a new, large-scale multiplayer setup about cops and robbers.

The transition caused mixed feelings, but many people enjoyed this new twist. Battlefield Hardline gained a dedicated fanbase that kept playing despite the arrival of other Battlefield titles. Nearly a decade down the line, the game is shutting its servers down.

DiRT Rally 2.0

The racing community continues to rave about DiRT Rally 2.0 and for good reasons. The title provided a genuine rally simulation experience that required players to be patient, skilled, and accurate.

Its challenging driving model ensured that each lap was satisfying and added to its reputation of being one of the finest rally titles ever created.

Holoearth, Elder Scrolls Blades, New World

With Bethesda releasing Holoearth, Elder Scrolls Blades, and New World, there was much anticipation about how this popular fantasy series would fare in the mobile space.

Players had an opportunity to battle through dungeons, build their own towns, and venture through the Elder Scrolls universe from a mobile device. While it did draw some initial interest, this quickly waned as the years went by. This mobile game is set to shut down in 2026, putting an end to Bethesda's mobile endeavor.

The End of an Era

Video game shutdowns are becoming more frequent nowadays since publishers are focusing on newer releases. However, closure has a deeper significance for the players of these five games. Years of gameplay, friends, wins, and memories will be associated with these games. Once the game shuts down, the memories may turn into gaming history that will be remembered by those who experienced it.
