Gmail is rolling out a new ‘Copy code’ shortcut that makes it easier to use two-factor authentication (2FA) codes received through email. The feature is arriving on the Gmail apps for Android and iOS.
The update allows users to copy a verification code directly from the inbox. They no longer need to open the email, locate the code and select the digits manually.
The new shortcut appears as a pill-shaped ‘Copy code’ button below the subject line of eligible emails. Gmail displays the detected verification code alongside the button.
Users can tap the shortcut to copy the code directly to the device clipboard. They can then switch to the app or website requesting the verification code and paste it. The feature can also appear within the email itself. Reports indicate that it has worked with verification emails from banking and retail services during initial testing.
The shortcut was spotted in Gmail for Android version 2026.09.07.x and Gmail for iOS version 6.0.260907. The rollout appears to be gradual, so the option may not immediately appear for every user.
Gmail’s new shortcut reduces that process to a single tap. The feature also builds on functionality already available for some SMS-based verification codes through Android’s messaging ecosystem.
For users who frequently receive 2FA codes through Gmail, the change could make account sign-ins more convenient. However, the shortcut currently remains limited to mobile apps and depends on Gmail recognising a verification code in an incoming message.
Users who have not received the feature yet can check for the latest Gmail update on their Android or iPhone. However, updating the app may not immediately activate the shortcut because the rollout is still underway.
