Google started rolling out its September Android Drop, bringing five new features to users across Find Hub, Gemini Live and Google Messages. The update is crucial for its broad compatibility. While some features are limited to newer Android versions, one of the headline additions will be available on phones running Android 9, an operating system released in 2018.
The rollout began on September 1, with availability varying by feature. Two features are available now or have started rolling out, one is being released in stages, and two are marked as coming soon.
One of the more practical additions is a new remembered-items feature in Find Hub. Users can ask Gemini to remember where they have left an important item, such as a passport or keys. The information is then saved in a Remembered tab and can be recalled later through Gemini.
The feature requires Android 16 and signed-in Find Hub and Gemini accounts in supported markets. It is important to note that this is not a tracking system. Find Hub stores the location description provided by the user; it does not monitor the item’s real-time location.
Google is also introducing Motion Assist, designed to make reading or watching content while traveling more comfortable. The feature places moving bubbles along the edges of the display, using data from the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to respond to vehicle motion.
Motion Assist requires Android 17 and is being delivered through Google Play Services. The rollout is staged, with Pixel devices among the first to receive it.
The feature attracting the most attention is Guided Vision in Gemini Live for its unusually broad Android compatibility. Google says it will work on compatible phones running Android 9 or newer.
Guided Vision uses the phone’s camera and Gemini Live to describe what is in front of the user. It can help with tasks such as reading small text on packaging, understanding a menu, or identifying household objects. Voice prompts can also tell users when to reposition the camera.
The feature is designed with blind and low-vision users in mind, although Google warns that it can make mistakes and should not be used for navigation or obstacle detection. It also requires the Gemini app, camera sharing, an account for users aged 18 or above, and availability in supported countries.

Google is also giving Messages users more ways to collaborate and personalize conversations. Google Keep integration allows people to create and edit shared notes and lists directly inside a chat. It can be useful for grocery lists, travel plans, and other group tasks without requiring users to switch between apps.
The second Messages addition is Chat theme, which lets users customize individual conversations with backgrounds, wallpapers and matching bubble colors. The chosen theme is visible only to the person who creates it.
Both Messages features depend on RCS rather than a specific Android version. Google’s latest Drop therefore combines features aimed at newer devices with app- and Play Services-based additions that can reach much older phones.
