Meta has assured users that it has fixed a major Instagram security issue, but they aren't fully reassured. Reports claim hackers might still exploit gaps tied to Meta’s AI system. This puts a lot of accounts at risk of being hacked, so concerns persist.
According to a report in TechCrunch, “attackers were able to send simple text prompts to Meta AI and change the email address linked to a target Instagram account. Once the email address was changed, hackers could gain control of the account.”
Some users noticed that hackers were tricking Meta’s AI support chatbot. Attackers changed email addresses on Instagram accounts. Once they did that, they reset passwords and took over the profiles. Even some high-profile accounts were affected, including those linked to celebrities, companies, and government organizations.
Earlier this week, Meta said it had fixed the problem and secured the affected accounts. However, new reports suggest that account hijackings may still be occurring. As a result, security experts wonder whether the real issue has actually been solved.
Meta is stepping up its game, but users can help by taking some security measures too. Given below are some of the security measures that can help:
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Instead of using SMS, try an authenticator app; it offers better protection if your password gets hacked.
Secure Your Email Account: Email is often the key to account recovery. Use a strong, unique password and enable 2FA on the email account as well.
Watch for Password Reset Notifications: If users get unexpected password reset emails or login alerts, it might mean someone's trying to access your account. Check into it right away.
Avoid Phishing Links: Don't click on password reset links or login pages in unsolicited emails, messages, or social media posts.
Review Account Activity Regularly: Check Instagram’s security settings for unfamiliar devices, locations, or recent login attempts.
Although Meta says it has fixed the AI support flaw, account hijackings are still affecting online safety. Instagram users need to stay alert even if there’s assurance from Meta. With limited information about the fix's success, it's best to use robust security measures to protect against takeovers.
