Lionsgate has partnered with Meta to bring The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping to audiences in 3D. This is the first time the technology company teamed up with a Hollywood studio to convert a feature film into 3D for a theatrical release.

The film’s 3D version will arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2026. It will later be available on Meta VR Glasses when the device launches in spring 2027.

3D Conversion Involves Director Francis Lawrence and DNEG

The 3D conversion was completed in collaboration with director Francis Lawrence and DNEG, the Academy Award-winning visual effects and animation studio. DNEG’s Stereo team has more than 15 years of experience in 3D conversion.

Lawrence said the aim was to make the film feel visceral and immersive, drawing audiences deeper into Haymitch Abernathy's experience. He added that adapting the film for 3D gave the team another creative tool to bring viewers closer to the character’s perspective.

Meta Reality Labs Entertainment Head Sarah Malkin described Lionsgate as an ideal partner, citing the artistic strength and global appeal of its franchises. She said the collaboration would show how technology can create new ways to experience films at home and in theatres.

Lionsgate Chief Revenue Officer Jim Packer also welcomed the partnership, calling it a first-of-its-kind collaboration.

Story Follows Young Haymitch Abernathy

Based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling books, the prequel is set in Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games. It follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

The competition features twice as many tributes. Inside the arena, Haymitch allies with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner, played by Mckenna Grace, and joins a group challenging the Capitol under President Snow, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes.

The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Ben Wang.

Additional Lionsgate titles and availability details for Meta VR Glasses will be announced later. The Hunger Games franchise has grossed more than USD 3.3 billion worldwide across five films.

With its theatrical 3D debut and upcoming VR release, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping could offer fans a new way to experience Panem, bringing them closer to the action beyond the traditional cinema screen.
