Apple may consider upgrading the memory of the upcoming pro-level iPhones to enhance their AI capabilities. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities suggests that the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will come with 9GB of memory. The aim is to provide an enhanced Apple Intelligence experience without increasing manufacturing expenses.

Apple is also preparing the devices for a more AI-centric future without bringing the hardware on par with its premium Pro lineup.

9GB RAM could replace the expected 12GB upgrade

In an X post, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted, “Apple's standard iPhone 18 launching in the first half of 2027 will be equipped with 9GB of DRAM. This is also believed to apply to the iPhone 18e, which typically debuts around the same time.”

It was previously reported that Apple could consider giving its standard iPhone 18 model 12GB of RAM. However, Kuo says Apple has now opted for a 9GB configuration. This comes as a major upgrade. The current range of iPhones from Apple is slated to launch with 8GB of RAM. Upgrading to 9GB will give users more memory for AI tasks without costing Apple more money.

Extra memory capacity is expected to facilitate the use of a more sophisticated Apple Intelligence, which will accompany future iOS versions. In line with Apple’s move toward developing more AI capabilities on-device, memory is becoming an essential consideration in running larger language models and AI applications.

Pro Models Retain AI Advantage

Kuo also claims the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will use Apple's A20 chipset. The processor is expected to be manufactured using TSMC's 2nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process, which could deliver better performance and improved power efficiency over the current generation.

Experts suggest that iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the rumored foldable iPhone would come with 12GB of RAM.  That distinction could allow Apple to reserve the most demanding Apple Intelligence features for its Pro models.

While the standard iPhone 18 models may comfortably handle everyday AI functions, the most advanced on-device AI experiences could remain exclusive to higher-end hardware. As of now, Apple hasn’t yet made any official announcement regarding this.
