Meta Platforms and attorneys general from 29 US states are discussing a possible settlement in a landmark federal case. Allegedly accusing that the company designed Facebook and Instagram to encourage addictive use among children and teenagers. The discussions come as the trial continues in federal court in Oakland, California.

The settlement talks could provide Meta with a way to avoid a potentially severe financial and regulatory outcome. However, there is no indication that an agreement has been reached, and the terms of any potential settlement remain unclear.

29 States Challenge Meta's Practices

The lawsuit brings together 29 state attorneys general. Four states are leading the trial, which include:

  • California

  • Colorado

  • Kentucky

  • New Jersey

The four states that will lead the trial include California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey. According to the states, “Meta had intentionally developed the platforms such that the young generation stayed glued to them despite the dangers of prolonged use of social media.”

It is alleged by the states that Meta had violated the privacy laws of children at the federal level. Meta had collected and used personal information of children aged below 13 years without their parents' consent.

Meta Denies Deliberately Targeting Teens

Meta denied the states' allegations. The company argues that its platforms do not cause adolescent harm and has criticized the states' demands for extensive product changes and financial penalties as excessive.

The outcome could set an important precedent for how US authorities regulate social media platforms and hold technology companies accountable for youth safety. A settlement, if reached, could also influence thousands of related lawsuits against Meta and other social media companies.
