Meta has launched Muse Glimmer, a new open-weight artificial intelligence model designed to perform smaller agentic tasks on personal devices. The company’s latest release comes as CEO Mark Zuckerberg steps up his campaign for wider access to open-weight AI models.
Muse Glimmer was developed by Meta to work locally on user machines utilizing only one graphics card. It may enable both developers and users to manage certain AI tasks without having to rely fully on cloud computing infrastructure.
The model is dedicated to agentic tasks, which means that AI can execute multi-step actions with fewer human interventions. Local deployment of the model may enable greater user control of the data and computing resources. It is a further step in Meta’s new strategy of providing AI models for external use.
Zuckerberg used the launch to reinforce his argument that advanced AI should not remain concentrated among a handful of technology companies.
In an essay titled ‘The Future is for Everyone,’ the Meta CEO argued that open-weight models can make AI more affordable and customisable, adding that broader access could help developers build new applications without depending on closed AI platforms.
Zuckerberg urged the US to reduce barriers around open AI development. He argued that American developers face restrictions that could make it harder to compete with Chinese AI companies.
