Nikita Bier steps down as Head of Product at Elon Musk-owned X after serving for just over a year. He announced the decision in a X post, saying it was time to ‘pass the torch’ and return to his ‘natural state: a poster.’ Although he is leaving day-to-day product leadership, Bier will continue supporting the company as an advisor.
Bier described leading X as ‘the privilege of a lifetime’ but acknowledged that managing one of the world's largest social media platforms had become a full-time commitment. He said the demanding nature of the role prompted him to take a break from operational responsibilities.
In his tenure at X, Bier oversaw one of the most ambitious product overhauls that have been seen in the platform ever since Elon Musk took ownership of it. As per Bier, the team introduced around 30 products and revamped key features such as the timeline, Android app, notifications, onboarding, chat, and messaging system.
Bier wrote on Wednesday, “X is, and will remain, the most important communication technology in history. But running this app is a 24/7 job, and it’s now time for me to take a breather,”. He further explained that there had been substantial growth in users and their engagement within the last year. Furthermore, the platform had gained around 70 spots in the App Store rankings by Apple.
His departure comes at a time when X continues expanding into payments, AI-powered features, and creator tools while integrating more closely with Musk's broader technology ecosystem. The company has not announced a direct replacement for the Head of Product position.
Bier had already made his name as a successful entrepreneur in consumer apps prior to becoming a part of the X team in 2025. He founded the social apps that were acquired by Meta and Gas, which Discord acquired in 2023. His involvement in X was seen as a move towards infusing product innovation into the platform similar to that of a startup.
Although Bier's leadership witnessed several periods where he was under the spotlight on account of issues involving X and their efforts in AI, he has left at a time when X has seen one of its most productive periods regarding product innovations.
