No Signal? Amazon Wants Your Smartphone to Connect Directly to Satellites: Here’s How

Amazon is preparing to expand beyond satellite broadband with an ambitious plan to bring direct-to-smartphone satellite connectivity by 2028. The company has proposed a new low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network that may allow compatible smartphones to make calls, send messages, access mobile data, and use emergency services even in areas without conventional cellular coverage.

The proposal, currently awaiting approval from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), positions Amazon to compete with existing and emerging satellite communication providers such as SpaceX's Starlink, AST SpaceMobile and Lynk Global. 

A Network Designed to Connect Phones Directly From Space

The proposed network is designed specifically for direct-to-device (D2D) communication. Compatible smartphones can connect directly to satellites without relying solely on nearby cell towers.

According to Amazon, the constellation would include up to 5,105 low Earth orbit satellites spread across multiple orbital layers. These satellites would support voice calls, text messaging, internet access and emergency communications in locations where terrestrial mobile networks are unavailable, such as rural communities, mountains, oceans and disaster-hit areas.

Amazon plans to partner with telecom companies worldwide so that satellite connectivity can seamlessly extend existing cellular coverage whenever traditional networks are out of reach.

How the Satellite System Will Operate

Amazon says the satellites will communicate with compatible smartphones using L-band and S-band spectrum, while Ka-band and V-band frequencies will handle communication between satellites, ground stations, and the broader internet infrastructure.

One of the project's distinguishing features is its onboard data processing capability. Instead of simply relaying signals back to Earth, the satellites will process portions of network traffic in orbit. It is supposed to bring down latency, increase reliability, and provide more efficient use of existing bandwidth. The company also plans to deploy advanced interference-management technologies to support a growing number of users.

Global Expansion and India's Role

Amazon's proposal builds on its planned acquisition of Globalstar, whose satellite spectrum and infrastructure are expected to strengthen the new direct-to-device network. The collaboration is also expected to support future satellite features for compatible Apple devices while expanding services to a wider range of smartphones over time.

With 390 satellites already launched for its broadband venture, Amazon is gradually expanding its efforts related to communications through satellites. If clearances are made as planned, then Amazon's direct-to-smartphone services could be launched by 2028, introducing another player in the world of satellite communications.
