

OpenAI has partnered with NVIDIA, Microsoft, AMD, Intel, and Broadcom to develop a new networking protocol called Multipath Reliable Connection (MRC). The protocol improves communication between thousands of GPUs that operate advanced AI systems, including ChatGPT.
OpenAI announced that MRC technology improves the speed, stability, and efficiency of AI training processes. The partnership highlights how AI companies compete to develop better infrastructure systems that support their upcoming advanced models.
Multipath Reliable Connection (MRC) allows AI systems to send data through multiple network paths at the same time. Traditional networking systems often depend on a single path. If that route slows down or fails, the entire training process can suffer delays.
The new protocol reduces that risk by automatically redirecting traffic during congestion or hardware issues. This keeps GPUs active and reduces idle time during AI training.
OpenAI said the technology is designed for modern 800Gb/s network interfaces used in large AI datacentres. The company added that predictable network performance has become critical as AI models grow larger and more complex.
Training modern AI systems requires thousands of GPUs to exchange massive amounts of data every second. Even a small network delay can affect overall performance and increase operational costs.
The MRC initiative also aligns with OpenAI’s broader infrastructure ambitions. The company has already announced major investments in AI datacentres through its Stargate project and its computing systems development initiatives. Demand for AI services continues to rise rapidly.
OpenAI recently claimed that ChatGPT serves hundreds of millions of users worldwide on a weekly basis. The increasing demand has created pressure for organizations to develop AI systems that operate at higher speeds and with better dependability. Experts in the industry predict that networking technologies, which include MRC, will emerge as essential components of future AI supercomputers.
