Qualcomm’s new partnership with Amazon Web Services attracted attention for its potential value of up to USD 60 billion. However, that figure does not represent a firm purchase order or guaranteed revenue for the chipmaker.

The companies entered a multi-generation agreement to develop customised chips for AI data centres. The partnership focuses on AI inference, where trained models process requests and generate results. Qualcomm and AWS will also work on high-speed optical connectivity for data centres.

USD 60 billion Chip Pact: What’s the Deal

According to Qualcomm’s regulatory filing, “The company issued Amazon a warrant to acquire up to 25 million Qualcomm shares at USD 161.26 per share. The warrant shares will vest in stages. Amazon must enter commercial arrangements and place binding purchase orders. It would buy Qualcomm’s server products, technology, systems and manufacturing services. Those purchases can support vesting up to a maximum value linked to USD 60 billion in payments.”

Experts suggest that investors should not treat the entire USD 60 billion as Qualcomm’s confirmed backlog or future revenue.Amazon already made initial purchase commitments. Reportedly, 3.75 million shares under the warrant vested when Qualcomm issued it, according to the filing. The remaining shares depend on additional commercial milestones and purchases through the agreement.

The warrant remains valid until September 2036, giving the partnership a long runway rather than an immediate USD 60-billion revenue boost.

Future Strategies for Investors

The Amazon agreement gives Qualcomm credibility as it tries to establish itself in the competitive AI infrastructure market. But the USD 60-billion figure should be viewed as an upper limit tied to future purchases, not as guaranteed sales.

Looking ahead, Qualcomm’s actual revenue will depend on Amazon’s purchase orders and completed purchases over the coming years. The partnership is significant, but its full financial value remains conditional.
