Sharjah introduced a framework to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across educational institutions. The Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) launched the initiative to help teachers and students use emerging technologies safely and responsibly. It aims to strengthen learning outcomes while protecting students’ rights.

The framework brings clear principles for integrating AI into education. It will support digital transformation without compromising student privacy, academic standards, or the central role of teachers in the learning process.

Focuses on Privacy and Accountability

The framework aligns with the UAE’s national directives and values while considering the emirate’s cultural and social context. It identifies fairness, privacy, data protection, transparency, and accountability as key principles for responsible AI adoption. The guidelines also focus on:

  • Human oversight

  • Cybersecurity

  • Critical thinking

  • Verification of AI-generated information

These measures aim to ensure that students and educators assess the accuracy of AI outputs before relying on them. Aisha Butti Al Ghafli, Director, Curriculum and Assessment Department at SPEA, said, “The framework reflects the authority’s commitment to integrating modern technologies into education through clear and responsible practices.” She also focused on the need to strengthen teachers’ roles, protect learners’ data,  and develop students’ critical thinking skills.

Clear Rules for AI-Assisted Assignments

The framework translates its ethical principles into practical guidance for educational institutions across Sharjah. It accounts for different curricula and learning environments. It also defines the responsibilities of key roles, including:

  • School leaders

  • Teachers

  • Students

  • IT teams

  • Educational specialists

  • Parents

Both educators and learners must verify the accuracy of AI-generated information and examine its sources before using it in academic work. The framework also highlights that AI-generated content should not replace students’ original work or undermine teachers’ roles. Looking ahead, it aims to preserve independent thinking and ensure that AI supports learning.
