Ethiopia has strengthened its push toward technological self-reliance with the inauguration of a new defence research laboratory supported by the United Arab Emirates. Located at the Ethiopian Defence University, the Advanced Central Laboratory is expected to play a key role in advancing research across artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing and engineering.
It will also support the country's broader industrial and innovation ambitions. The project also reflects the growing strategic partnership between Ethiopia and the UAE in technology, education and national development.
The newly opened laboratory is built on a 20,850-square-metre campus with financial support from the UAE under the two nations' bilateral development partnership. Officials say the facility is designed to bridge academic research with practical applications, helping Ethiopia strengthen capabilities in emerging technologies while addressing evolving security and industrial requirements.
The research centre houses dedicated laboratories for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, electrical power systems, communications engineering, automation, 3D printing, CNC machining, prototyping and nursing simulation. Together, these facilities are expected to support specialized research, workforce training and technology development across multiple sectors beyond defence.
Speaking at the inauguration, Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed described the Advanced Central Laboratory as ‘a flagship project’ that places Ethiopia’s national security on a stronger technological foundation.
She said the facility goes beyond housing sophisticated equipment by transforming ‘knowledge into professional competence, research into innovation, and innovation into practical solutions,’ while contributing to knowledge transfer, scientific research, and the development of indigenous technological capabilities.
By supporting locally developed technologies and technical expertise, the centre aims to reduce reliance on imported technologies while strengthening Ethiopia's manufacturing ecosystem and research capabilities. The university also plans to provide consultancy services in cybersecurity, logistics engineering and power infrastructure, creating additional opportunities for industry engagement.
One of its unique characteristics is that it has an energy-generating system that incorporates renewable energy sources. Solar panels have been installed along with battery packs and inverters to power the lab. According to officials, this setup will meet a large percentage of the university’s daily energy requirements. Water heating is also a part of the facility.
