The US administration has announced more than USD 6 billion in science initiatives, including a USD 215 million quantum computing competition and USD 2.4 billion in artificial intelligence investments. The package was unveiled on October 8 at the White House’s ‘Science: A New Golden Age’ summit in Washington.

The initiatives cover government funding, private-sector investment and computing resources for research in energy, healthcare, quantum technology and space exploration. The announcement comes as advances in quantum computing raise concerns about the long-term security of encryption systems used by cryptocurrencies.

Fault-Tolerant Systems

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has identified eight research areas for its Quantum Genesis Q Competition. These include chemistry, materials science, subatomic physics and applied mathematics.

Announced on September 17, the competition has a proposed funding pool of USD 215 million to support the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers. Participating teams must demonstrate systems capable of operating with at least 100 logical qubits and performing hundreds of millions of operations.

Logical qubits use error-correction techniques to improve the reliability of quantum calculations. The programme will distribute funding in stages, with early milestone awards of up to USD 1.5 million per team.

A USD 100 million prize pool targets systems demonstrating at least 100 logical qubits. Separate USD 50 million allocations are planned for systems reaching 150 and 200 logical qubits. The DOE has said the funding depends on future congressional appropriations, so the full amount is not guaranteed.

Cryptocurrency Security Concerns

The summit also highlighted AI research support involving companies including Nvidia, AMD, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The stated quantum competition objectives focus on scientific computing rather than cryptocurrency protection.

Earlier research from Google suggested quantum computers might need fewer resources than previously estimated to break certain encryption systems. Such findings have intensified concerns about the future resilience of cryptographic methods used across digital assets.

However, the competition announcement does not establish a direct link between its funding and cryptocurrency security. Its primary goal is to advance reliable quantum computing for scientific research.
