Valve is returning to the virtual reality market with the Steam Frame, a standalone headset designed to blend wireless mobility with high-end PC VR gaming. While Valve has detailed the device's hardware and software specs, the company is holding back on an official release date. The upcoming launch marks Valve’s first major hardware push since the Valve Index, as it attempts to claim a larger share of the immersive gaming ecosystem
Steam Frame does not rely on external base stations or a wired PC connection. Reports suggest that Valve has built the headset around a streaming-first architecture. This allows users to play games natively or stream them wirelessly from a gaming PC.
Steam Frame relies on the VR-centric version of SteamOS and uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. The device boasts 16 GB of RAM and is offered in different storage capacities up to 1 TB. Valve claims that users will be able to play both VR and non-VR games available in their Steam library.
The headset has two 2160x2160 LCDs, pancake lenses, eye tracking and inside-out tracking via onboard cameras. To ensure minimal latency, Valve equipped the headset with a special wireless adapter that enables a seamless connection to the gaming PC.
Valve has also redesigned its controllers with repairability in mind. Recent teardown images suggest the controllers use a more modular internal layout, making future repairs easier than previous generations.
A key differentiator for Steam Frame is its emphasis on wireless gameplay. Steam Frame is being positioned as a solution for gamers seeking high-quality PC VR without being tethered to any wires. The modular design of the product, lightweight build and well-balanced weight distribution are expected to provide increased comfort during gaming.
No details about its prices have been announced yet. However, many industry experts are speculating about the cost, given current supply chain difficulties. According to the latest reports, hardware shipments were already arriving at US warehouses. Steam Frame is expected to appeal to gamers looking for both VR and PC gaming in a single device.
