Artificial intelligence has become a major part of public administration across the world. Government departments now use AI to speed up work, improve public services, reduce errors, and handle large amounts of data. The latest OECD Digital Government Outlook 2026 shows that 35 out of 36 OECD countries, or 97%, already use AI in at least one government function. Internal operations and public services show the highest level of adoption. AI use in policy decisions and oversight remains lower since those areas need stronger transparency and stricter controls.

Tax and Revenue Departments

Tax departments stand among the earliest and strongest users of AI. These agencies use AI to detect tax fraud, review financial records, identify unusual transactions, and select cases for audits. AI also checks tax returns, verifies documents, and supports faster processing of refunds. This technology helps officials focus on complex investigations while routine tasks move at a much faster pace. Several countries continue to expand AI across tax administration to improve compliance and strengthen revenue collection.

Healthcare Departments

In public healthcare systems, AI plays a crucial role in performing many tasks. Hospitals introduce the technology in such spheres as analyses of medical images, disease monitoring, organization of visits, and planning of hospital operations. Public health institutions resort to AI to analyze the trends in diseases and make adequate preparations for outbreaks. In most of the cases, healthcare institutions utilize AI together with medical professionals so that the technology does not have unlimited control over clinical decisions.

Citizen Service Departments

Many government offices now offer AI-powered virtual assistants that answer public questions at any hour. These systems help citizens complete forms, track applications, receive updates, and access government information in several languages. AI also supports document summarization and faster response times inside government offices. Such improvements shorten waiting periods and allow public employees to handle more complex requests.

Transportation Departments

Transportation authorities use AI to manage traffic, inspect roads, monitor bridges, and improve public transport operations. AI studies traffic patterns, predicts congestion, and helps engineers schedule maintenance before major problems appear. This technology also supports better planning for road construction and transport services. Such systems improve travel efficiency while reducing maintenance costs over time.

Defense and Public Safety

Defense organizations use AI for intelligence analysis, logistics planning, cyber security, and surveillance. Public safety agencies also rely on AI to review evidence, support emergency response, and study crime patterns. Human experts remain responsible for all major decisions, while AI supplies faster analysis and valuable insights. This balance supports national security without removing human judgment from critical operations.

Justice, Immigration, and Social Welfare

The departments of justice employ AI to analyze legal documents, manage cases, and provide assistance with legal research activities. Immigration officers utilize AI for conducting identity checks, processing visas, and assessing risks. Social welfare departments depend on AI to deal with claims for financial aid or assistance, determine eligibility of applicants, and identify fraudulent requests. Faster processing minimizes the time necessitated for subjects to receive services while allowing authorities to supervise the spending of public funds.

India Expands Government AI Adoption

India has made rapid progress in government AI adoption. The IndiaAI Mission has identified 762 AI use cases across 62 ministries, which makes it one of the largest public sector AI programs in the world. Government departments now apply AI across taxation, healthcare, agriculture, railways, education, and defense. Recent initiatives also include state-level investments in AI infrastructure, such as Assam's government-owned GPU cluster that supports AI-powered public services. These efforts strengthen digital governance across multiple sectors.

Strong Growth with Responsible Governance

The use of AI across governments worldwide is on the rise. The OECD shares that 30 out of 36 countries, or 83%, have at least one governing authority for AI in their public sector, while 32 out of 36 countries (89%) also provide their public sector workers with training in AI. At the same time, governments pursue their efforts to establish stronger measures of protection, transparency, and risk evaluation. This balanced approach enables government departments to achieve improved efficiency and accountability in modern governance as AI becomes an essential element.
