Apple is preparing a major software push at WWDC 2026, scheduled for June 2026. iOS 27 is expected to bring wider AI integration, redesigned AirPods controls, and support for alternative streaming systems beyond AirPlay. Fresh details shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggest Apple is focusing heavily on usability upgrades while also responding to regulatory pressure in Europe.
The update arrives at a critical moment for the company. WWDC 2026 is expected to mark Tim Cook’s final keynote appearance as Apple CEO before John Ternus reportedly takes charge later this year.
Apple is reportedly revamping the AirPods settings panel across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The redesign follows growing user feedback around managing newer AirPods features, such as head gesture recognition and hearing aid functionality. According to the report, Apple is not planning a standalone AirPods app. Instead, the company wants to simplify controls inside system settings.
The updated menu is expected to surface important options more clearly and improve navigation for users handling advanced audio features. The move signals Apple’s push to make ecosystem devices easier to manage as AirPods continue evolving beyond standard wireless earbuds.
Apple is also preparing upgrades for its AI image generation tools in iOS 27. Gurman previously noted that Genmoji could soon suggest ready-made emoji combinations using frequently used phrases and photos stored in a user’s library. The company is now reportedly improving the quality of its in-house AI image models.
The upgrade is expected to improve outputs generated through Genmoji and Image Playground. Apple is also allegedly exploring support for additional third-party AI models alongside ChatGPT integration. The changes reflect Apple’s attempt to strengthen its AI ecosystem while facing growing competition from Google, Samsung, and OpenAI-backed platforms.
Apple may also introduce support for third-party streaming standards such as Google Cast. The feature is reportedly linked to compliance requirements under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. If introduced, users could choose alternatives to AirPlay for streaming audio, videos, and photos to TVs or speakers.
Analysts view the move as a significant shift in Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem strategy. WWDC 2026 carries pressure beyond software announcements, with investors closely watching Apple’s AI roadmap, regulatory response, and leadership transition under a possible post-Tim Cook era.
