Call of Duty is all set for a major platform comeback. The upcoming installment of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2, after almost a decade of absence from its consoles.
The move comes as no surprise to industry experts who have been leaking this information for several months. There were rumors in the gaming community that Activision was readying the game for release on the new console.
The move marks a significant shift for the franchise. Call of Duty titles were once available on Nintendo systems. But the series gradually disappeared from the company’s consoles as hardware limitations widened.
According to Nintendo,“ The Call of Duty series returns to the Nintendo platform with Modern Warfare 4. The latest installment pushes the series into darker and more dangerous missions, where consequence and escalation bring long-running storylines to a powerful and emotional breaking point.”
With the launch of an advanced Switch 2, Activision aims to reintroduce the series on the Nintendo console. According to Activision, the game will be developed for the new console, as opposed to being streamed via cloud or released on a smaller scale.
Nintendo also shared that the game has been made specifically for current-gen technology, which means better maps, graphics, and even enhanced gaming features. Bringing gamers to the Korean Peninsula and offer them an exciting storyline to follow. What's more, multiplayer features as well as the DMZ Extraction option have also been confirmed by the developers at Activision.
This move has been interpreted as fitting into the larger strategy by Microsoft to incorporate Call of Duty in more gaming ecosystems after it acquires Activision Blizzard. Modern Warfare 4 is expected to roll out on October 23, 2026. The game will launch in phases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision will skip older consoles such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
