Facebook and Instagram have recently seen declining user engagement, with many people reporting that their experiences on these platforms are no longer enjoyable. Users feel that their feeds have become cluttered and less personal. Rather than seeing updates from friends, they often encounter algorithmically selected content. This change is prompting users to take a step back from these platforms.

Algorithm vs Authenticity

The primary cause of this issue stems from the methods used to display content. The algorithms control which content users see in their feeds. The system selects posts based on their ability to attract greater user engagement through likes, shares, and views. This system promotes content that attracts attention, but it does not always deliver authentic material.

Users say they miss seeing simple updates from friends and family. Now, feeds display viral videos alongside content from unfamiliar sources. This makes the experience feel less personal. Many people feel disconnected.

At the same time, smaller platforms are expanding. People are joining private groups and chat-based communities. These spaces create a more authentic atmosphere through their reduced noise level. Users can engage in open dialogue without experiencing any social constraints. People increasingly prefer to use social platforms for quiet social interactions, according to this current trend.

AI Content, Ads, and Declining Feed Quality

The increasing availability of AI-generated content creates another problem for society. The system enables fast content creation for users, but many people believe the generated material produces identical outputs. The content contains no elements that indicate human existence. The solution creates additional problems by making social media feeds appear identical.

The number of spam messages and bot operations has reached new heights. Users are beginning to doubt the platform's security because of this development. People find it harder to tell what is real.

The platform faces major difficulties because of advertisements. Most users think their feed contains excessive advertising. Users experience interruptions when sponsored posts appear too frequently. The scrolling process becomes exhausting for users because of this design.

The combined effects of these factors lead to a decline in the quality of experience. Users now prefer to spend less time on these applications because of this situation.

A Shift Toward Mindful Social Media Use

People need to develop better habits around their social media use. Users are thinking more about how they use social media. Most people want to reduce their screen time. They are looking for better ways to stay connected.

Users now prefer quality over quantity. Users want authentic material and genuine discussions. The way people use social media now shows a shift in their behavior. The user request for simpler yet more meaningful features shows that Meta needs to develop new solutions.
