The forward-deployed engineer emerged as one of the fastest-growing and highest-paid engineering roles in Silicon Valley. Companies are hiring engineers who can take AI systems directly to customers and adapt them to real business needs.

Labor-market data from Lightcast, cited by Fortune, shows job postings for forward-deployed engineers increased more than tenfold between January and August 2026 from the same period last year. The number was more than 45 times higher than in 2023.

The growth is far ahead of the wider technology job market. Tech job postings increased by just over 10% during the same period.

The role involves working closely with customers to configure AI tools, integrate software and address complex operational problems. Engineers often work directly with client teams instead of developing products solely from an office.

Palantir helped establish this model several years ago. Its engineers work with customers to build and deploy software around specific business requirements. The approach is now being adopted across the technology industry.

Microsoft, Meta, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic opened positions linked to the model. Nvidia and Scale AI have also introduced similar structures in product management and technical architecture.

The pay is another major attraction. Lightcast data puts the median advertised salary for forward-deployed engineers above USD 188,000. That compares with about USD 145,000 for traditional software engineering roles.

At some companies, compensation can be substantially higher. Anthropic positions have reportedly offered total compensation of up to USD 400,000.

The role requires more than coding expertise. Engineers need skills in machine learning, generative AI, APIs, data pipelines, cloud infrastructure and production systems.

They also need strong communication and business judgement. The focus is on turning technical capabilities into measurable results for customers.
