AI agents could become a major force behind stablecoin adoption as early as 2027, according to digital-asset executives and industry research. As autonomous software begins buying services on behalf of users, stablecoins may emerge as the preferred money for fast, small and programmable transactions.

Machine-to-Machine Payments

The immediate opportunity lies in machine-to-machine commerce. AI agents can pay for application programming interface calls, cloud computing, data access, inference and digital content without waiting for human approval at every step.

These payments often involve tiny amounts and occur at high frequency. Traditional card systems were not built for such use cases. Stablecoins, by contrast, can move value instantly and carry programmable conditions, making them better suited to automated transactions.

Deloitte says agentic AI and stablecoin pilots have already moved from testing into live deployment. The firm notes that agents are beginning to initiate payments under controls such as spending limits, identity checks and transaction expiry rules.

Why Stablecoins Fit Agents

An agent can hold a stablecoin balance, pay a service provider in seconds and receive payment for completed work. Blockchain-based transfers also allow payment terms to be embedded directly into the transaction.

Bitcoin Suisse executive Andrej Majcen expects 2027 to bring wider proliferation of AI agents. Hashed’s Edward Hong believes agents will increasingly transact directly with one another over the next three to five years.

Future Strategies: Promoting Early Adoption

The trend is no longer theoretical. Coinbase’s x402 protocol, which lets AI agents pay each other in stablecoins for machine-native purchases, has reportedly processed more than 178 million agent-initiated transactions since its May 2025 launch.

Industry participants said a large share of current agent payments already use USDC. Cloudflare has also highlighted stablecoins as suitable for small, high-frequency payments tied to APIs, data, inference and content. Experts also suggest that 2027 could mark the point at which stablecoins become the default settlement layer for a new class of automated, agent-driven transactions.
