Google plans to expand its Play Age Signals API to Android developers globally by the end of 2026. The move will help developers create age-appropriate experiences without collecting sensitive personal information. The feature is available in Brazil and will reach Australia and Canada before its broader global rollout.
On July 29, Google announced, “Play Age Signal API is a system designed that allow developers to confirm user ages without impinging on privacy. This will be rolled out in all countries, including the US, by the end of 2026.”
Unlike traditional age verification systems, Google's new feature does not require uploading government-issued identity documents or selfies. The API shares an age range or supervision status with eligible apps. Developers receive the information needed to determine whether a user belongs to a particular age group, reducing unnecessary data collection.
The Play Age Signals API enables apps to receive signals about the individual’s age, but not the specific date of birth. Parents can enable Family Link to send age ranges for their children's supervised Google accounts. Apps will be able to use these age signals to offer relevant features, content, or limitations.
Most adults who use Android are not likely to notice any differences, but younger users could find more stringent safety measures being imposed in the supported applications. Developers will be able to limit the functionalities of their apps, avoid inappropriate content, or provide age-appropriate experiences according to the age signals provided by Google Play.
The rollout comes as governments worldwide tighten regulations around children's online safety. Several jurisdictions now require app stores and developers to verify users' ages before granting access to certain digital experiences. Google's API helps developers comply with these regulations without storing highly sensitive identity data themselves.
