Google has rolled out two major updates to its Gemini app. The latest changes bring a redesigned interface to Android devices and add new options for creating and editing files directly within chats.

The updated Gemini design was first introduced on phones featuring Gemini Intelligence, including the Pixel 11. Google is now making the same interface available on other Android devices.

The new design gives the Gemini search bar a lighter and more transparent look. It also adds a blur effect and colorful animations around the bar. The edges of the pill-shaped search bar now look more see-through than before. Users who have not received the update yet can try closing the Google app completely and opening it again.

Editing Within the Chat

The major update adds new tools that let users create and edit files through Gemini chats. Users can ask the AI assistant to prepare documents, presentations and spreadsheets. They can also view these files directly in the chat and make changes to selected sections by editing them or giving Gemini new instructions.

For presentations, users can ask Gemini to prepare slide content and outlines. They can check the slides and request changes to the design, tone or content. Once ready, presentations can be opened in Google Slides or downloaded as PPTX and PDF files. Users can also create tables, trackers and data sheets by entering simple prompts. These spreadsheets can be opened directly in Google Sheets.

Gemini can also create and edit Google Docs, PDFs, Markdown, LaTeX and TXT files. Users can make changes within the chat or open the file in a full-screen view for editing. PDF files can be previewed and edited on both the web version and mobile apps.

However, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT and code file support is currently available only on the web. Google has made these file creation and editing features available in all languages supported by the Gemini app.
