Google has introduced Short Video Overviews for NotebookLM, adding a new AI-powered way to understand complex information through concise, visually engaging videos. The update uses Nano Banana 2 Lite, Google's fastest and most cost-effective image-generation model.
The aim is to transform uploaded documents into approximately 60-second vertical videos. The announcement comes alongside the broader rollout of Nano Banana 2 Lite and marks another step in Google's push to make AI-assisted learning more interactive.
According to the tech giant, “the new Short Video Overviews feature caters to users who want to quickly understand the key ideas from their uploaded sources without watching a longer explainer. Like the traditional Visual Overviews, the feature leverages Google's AI video generation capabilities to automatically convert uploaded documents into narrated explainer videos.”
The update centers on the Nano Banana 2 Lite, which goes by the Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image. This is Google’s most efficient and cost-effective image generation model, capable of producing high-quality images in 4 seconds while requiring minimal computational resources.
The model enables NotebookLM to create visual overviews quickly while maintaining high image quality for educational videos. The update is intended for individuals who wish to understand the core concepts within one minute without having to go through long documentation and video tutorials.
The introduction of the Short Video Overviews is currently being rolled out to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra customers, on both mobile and web. Google has confirmed that this service will be available to free NotebookLM subscribers in the future, though no timelines have been provided yet.
Users can generate Short Video Overviews in NotebookLM by selecting the Video tab in the Studio section after uploading files or notes. This option generates a video overview of a selected topic.
The introduction of the Short Video Overviews adds to the number of AI-based educational features in NotebookLM, which already include Audio Overviews, Explainer Videos, and Cinematic Video Overviews.
