Fresh privacy concerns emerged after reports claimed Instagram DMs may no longer remain fully encrypted under Meta’s latest changes. Instagram is one of the most widely used social media platforms, and its end-to-end encryption ensures that messages shared on the app are safe and secure. Meta wants to make Instagram chats more private while also improving at spotting harmful content and responding faster.

What Meta’s Instagram Encryption Changes Mean for Users

The encryption feature is designed to protect chats and shared media as they move through servers, so others cannot see or change them. This option has been removed, which means messages may be accessed in certain situations for safety checks and support.

Users can still chat and send photos, videos, and voice notes, but with less private protection than before. Meta said that the change may help improve safety and respond better to harmful content online.

Meta has not fully explained the technical details behind these changes. Even so, people and privacy experts around the world are already talking about and questioning the decision.

Why Privacy Experts are Concerned About Instagram DMs

The end-to-end encryption feature protects messages sent from one person to another, so that even Instagram cannot access or modify the content of the conversation. The feature has been available on Instagram since 2023 as an optional setting to enhance privacy for direct messages or media shared in the app.

Instagram can now access your messages in certain cases, especially for safety checks or system support. While the users will still be able to chat normally and send photos, videos, and voice notes, it will lack the extra security layer that keeps conversations fully private.

Closing Note

Instagram has urged users to save important chats or media before the change is fully applied. Users who use the encryption feature may see a feature in their DMs. To take a backup of chats within the app, one has to follow the instructions shown in notifications.

Meta has faced criticism from governments and child safety groups that strong encryption makes it harder to detect illegal activities, scams, or harmful content online.
