Instagram has started rolling out a long-awaited feature that allows users to rearrange posts on their profile grid. This feature gives them fresh control over how the pages appear. The update, launched globally on June 8, is available on both Android and iPhone and lets users move posts into any order they prefer.

Shift From Fixed Timelines to Curated Profiles

Earlier, Instagram profiles showed posts in the order they were uploaded. Users could only feature up to three posts at the top by pinning them, while the rest stayed in fixed order.

However, with the new update, users can drag and move posts, including older ones. This lets them design profiles as curated spaces instead of fixed timelines. The feature works only on mobile apps and is not available on desktop.

How the Grid Reordering Works

Instagram has made the process simple. Users need to press and hold any post on their profile until a menu appears. They can then select ‘Reorder grid’ to move posts into a new layout.

Pinned posts stay fixed at the top of the profile. Pinned Reels also do not change their position. Users can change the layout as many times as they want.

Creator Focus and Visual Storytelling Push

The update shows how users and creators now see Instagram profiles as changing visual identities. Many creators, brands, and public figures often redesign their grids to highlight campaigns, projects, or personal milestones.

Well-known users also clear or reorganiz their feeds when starting new phases in their careers. The new tool removes the need to delete or archive posts for redesigns and allows users to keep content while changing how it is displayed.

Platform Response and User Demand

Meta Platforms, which owns Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads, has called this feature one of the most requested by users. The company said the rollout took time as it worked to improve the experience.

The update also comes as Instagram focuses on its support systems and account recovery tools. Meta has been developing AI-based help features to assist users with account issues and password recovery.

Changing Role of Profile Grids

Instagram profiles are now more like curated showcases than simple timelines. The option to reorganise grids strengthens this change by giving users control over how their profiles look without changing the original posts.

The rollout is one of the biggest profile updates in recent years and focuses on design flexibility and user expression.
