The International Olympic Committee paused its Esports expansion, marking a major shift in strategy under its new leadership. The new plan will pause the ongoing work linked to competitive gaming within the Olympic structure.

According to reports, the IOC has formally suspended the operations of its Esports Commission. It reflects a broader review of priorities rather than a complete exit from esports.

Olympic body hits pause on esports push

The IOC’s Esports Commission operations won’t be functional anymore since all related policies, partnerships, and event-scheduling work have been suspended. The Olympic Esports Games are canceled in their current form, which had been scheduled to take place in 2027.

The reset process results from the Saudi Arabia partnership, which existed between the two parties for many years. The agreement established a framework to support the Olympic Esports ecosystem for more than 10 years. The IOC lost its financial and operational resources when the agreement was canceled, leading it to evaluate the project's feasibility.

Coventry has used a slow-moving approach since becoming the leader. She is focusing on essential Olympic disciplines and building long-term institutional capacity. The IOC is shifting its focus from Thomas Bach's support of esports to create a new direction for its Esports program. It might investigate digital integration options, which would be less comprehensive than dedicated Esports programming.

Industry Impact and Future Plans

The sports organization currently restricts its Olympic Esports activities as it works out its operational needs. Stakeholders had expected deeper global recognition through Olympic inclusion. The current situation has reached a temporary halt. The IOC has not eliminated all possibilities for esports at this point.

The organization will develop a new framework after conducting its internal assessment. It aims to focus on three main areas: establishing operational credibility, developing sound governance systems, and maintaining long-term sustainability. Looking ahead, IOC will establish additional operational areas.
