Apple has introduced end-to-end encrypted RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging for iPhones with the rollout of iOS 26.5. The update provides better privacy protection for iPhone users who communicate with Android users. The feature is currently available in beta version across supported regions and carriers.
The update represents Apple's biggest improvement to Android-iPhone messaging since it adopted RCS last year.
Until now, encrypted chats on iPhones only worked within Apple’s iMessage system. Now the update allows encrypted RCS messaging between iPhone and Android users instead of relying on standard SMS or unencrypted RCS messages.
Apple stated, 'iMessage was built with privacy in mind and has always been end-to-end encrypted. It remains the best way to communicate between Apple devices.'
Through its iOS 26.5 release, Apple will allow users to send encrypted RCS messages by implementing new industry standards that the GSM Association developed. The change allows users to communicate securely across different devices without relying on Apple-exclusive services.
The update supports the following features:
High-resolution media sharing
Typing indicators
Read receipts
Improved group messaging alongside stronger security protections
Additionally, Google confirmed that Android users using the latest version of Google Messages will also gain access to encrypted chats.
Apple has established privacy as a fundamental marketing point for its iPhone products. The company shows its dedication to digital privacy protection by implementing encryption for Android user chats.
The implementation of encrypted RCS will lead to reduced use of traditional SMS messaging systems. Apart from the encrypted RCS, the new features of iOS 26.5 also include pride-themed wallpapers, improved Apple Maps recommendations, and enhanced security.
