Apple’s long-awaited foldable iPhone is finally expected to make its debut on September 9. But there’s one question remaining: What will Apple call it?
For months, reports have pointed to three possible names — iPhone Duo, iPhone Ultra and iPhone Fold. The latest report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests Apple may settle on iPhone Duo, moving away from the Ultra label that has dominated earlier rumours.
Apple’s foldable is expected to use a book-style design, with a conventional outer display that opens into a larger internal screen.
Reports suggest the device could feature a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch foldable screen. The design is expected to resemble Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and not a clamshell phone.
Apple used ‘Duo’ before. The company launched its PowerBook Duo line in the 1990s and later used the name for the MagSafe Duo Charger. However, the branding also has baggage, including Microsoft’s Surface Duo.
The naming choice matters because it could reveal how Apple views foldable phones. Duo would emphasise the two-screen experience. Ultra would make the device a premium flagship. Fold would put the technology itself front and centre.
For now, the iPhone Duo appears to have the strongest momentum in the latest reports. Apple is expected to settle the debate at its September 9 event, where the foldable could become the company’s biggest iPhone design change since the original model launched in 2007.
