Space42, the UAE-based SpaceTech company, successfully tested direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity with Skylo Technologies using standard Android smartphones in the UAE. The July 2026 test demonstrated two-way SMS and SOS messaging through Thuraya-4, Space42’s next-generation mobile communications satellite. The demonstration used standard Android devices without any additional hardware.
The test marks another step towards integrating satellite networks with conventional mobile communications. It could eventually help users stay connected in areas where terrestrial mobile networks do not reach.
Traditional satellite communications often require dedicated handsets or external equipment. The idea behind D2D is to overcome this issue and allow smartphones to connect with satellites directly.
Space42 and Skylo have cooperated to make Thuraya-4 work with the 3GPP-compliant non-terrestrial network platform of Skylo. This system is intended to bring satellite communications closer to conventional mobile communication standards.
The companies have already conducted a test of a two-way live voice call on Thuraya-4. Space42 said the test did not require any modifications to the SIM or the operator’s core infrastructure. The International Telecommunication Union sees D2D satellite networks as an emerging layer of global telecommunications infrastructure.
The UAE demonstration focused on messaging and emergency communications, but the technology has broader ambitions. The industry aims to achieve voice calls, data services and more through satellite-based mobile connectivity.
Space42’s previous voice demonstration hints at D2D capabilities going beyond simple messaging in the future as the network, device and regulatory infrastructure develop.
However, satellite-based communication cannot replace mobile networks right away. It will be possible to deploy commercially when the necessary infrastructure is in place.
