A defining moment for Marathon has quickly turned into a setback for its image. Complaints are no longer limited to a few players but are also being raised by top streamers. The scale of the issue has grown so large that Bungie has been forced into damage-control mode, raising concerns about the game’s competitive future.
High-rated performers and players are also conveying an unplayable condition due to cheaters. Streamer AlbralelieVT reported encountering cheaters in nearly half his matches during a single session. “Tried to play some ranked marathon tonight, played 7 games and got off after being blatantly cheated on in 3 of the 7 matches I played,” he wrote. “As much as I enjoy the game, I don't care enough to deal with cheaters plaguing a game again and will probably stop making content on it and go back to focusing on Apex.”
Players claim cheaters are using paid tools to pre-fire through walls, bypass visibility mechanics, and openly harass opponents. Now the accusations go beyond typical cheating as repeat offenders remain active.
Bungie has acknowledged the issue and is assuring expanded detection systems and a more streamlined reporting process. “Some of this work is live already, and more improvements will roll out over the coming weeks,” the studio stated. The response has drawn criticism for focusing on long-term fixes rather than immediate enforcement. Players argue that detection without quick bans risks normalizing cheating.
Players are comparing Marathon with The Cycle: Frontier, which collapsed under the weight of unchecked cheating. The high-ranked marathon lobbies reportedly guarantee encounters with cheaters, which makes the situation even worse.
Bungie insists anti-cheat is an ongoing battle. That may be true, but for players, patience is not infinite. If enforcement doesn’t catch up with detection quickly, Marathon risks losing not just matches but also its player base.
