‘Magic: The Gathering’ is expanding its Marvel collaboration with ‘Marvel: Darkhold Destiny’, the first Universes Beyond set announced for 2027. Revealed by Wizards of the Coast at New York Comic Con, the upcoming expansion will bring characters including Doctor Strange, Thor, Ghost Rider, Hela and Dormammu into the trading card game.

The set will introduce an original Marvel storyline, with supernatural threats and conflicts across dimensions at the center of the narrative. It is scheduled to launch on April 9, 2027, with booster packs, Collector Boosters and four pre-constructed Commander decks planned for release.

Marvel Darkhold Destiny to Introduce an Original Story

Unlike a conventional crossover featuring established characters and stories, ‘Darkhold Destiny’ will present an original narrative developed jointly by Marvel and Wizards of the Coast.

The story centers on Dormammu and Hela, who combine a page of the Darkhold to tear open the boundaries between realities, unleashing supernatural threats across the multiverse. Players will encounter Marvel heroes and villains as the conflict unfolds across different dimensions.

The expansion will also introduce a brand-new Marvel character. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly are working on a companion Marvel Comics release that will explore the character's origin. The digital edition is scheduled for February 2027, followed by a physical release in April.

Magik, Ghost Rider and More Characters Join the Set

The expansion will feature several prominent Marvel characters, including Magik, Doctor Strange, Thor and Ghost Rider. Magik will enter the game through her signature stepping disks, while the set will explore previously uncharted locations within the Marvel Universe.

Cards revealed during the announcement include Magik transforming into Darkchild, Gargantos and the Darkhold itself. The expansion will also introduce the Vengeance mechanic, an Adventure-like gameplay feature that allows players to cast spells from their graveyard and return the permanent attached to them to the battlefield. The Arcane spell subtype will also return.

Commander Decks and Collector Products Confirmed

Alongside standard booster packs and Collector Boosters, Darkhold Destiny will include four pre-constructed Commander decks themed around Marvel heroes and villains, including the Midnight Sons.

The product lineup will also feature Scene Boxes, a Bundle, an Arcanum Bundle and other collector-focused offerings. New Booster Fun card treatments will give collectors additional options.
