A trailer for the next Mass Effect game has surfaced online following the closure of developer BioWare, offering a glimpse of a project that has now been cancelled. The footage reveals the possible title, Mass Effect: Universe, and features the return of Liara T'Soni, one of the franchise's most recognizable characters.
The trailer began circulating online shortly after news emerged that Electronic Arts (EA) had shut down BioWare and cancelled its next Mass Effect project. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier confirmed that the leaked footage was genuine, while IGN also verified its authenticity.
The trailer opens with a disclaimer describing the footage as in-engine material created by a small team using pre-production assets. Although it offers a look at the game's visual direction and story, it does not feature actual gameplay.
The footage introduces a new male protagonist who appears to have a military background. In a bar, he speaks with an Asari woman about his previous life in the Alliance military and his new line of work, which involves preventing conflicts before they begin.
The sequence shows glimpses of the protagonist travelling across different locations and dealing with emerging threats. The conversation takes a turn when the Asari woman reveals that she has been starting the very conflicts he is trying to prevent.
Another woman then lowers her hood, revealing herself as Liara T'Soni, a familiar character from the original Mass Effect trilogy.
Liara and the new protagonist join forces against the woman and her henchmen. The scene features gunfire and biotic abilities, bringing back the science-fiction action associated with the franchise.
The trailer concludes with a title card displaying Mass Effect Universe, followed by a ‘coming soon’ message. However, the game's cancellation means this particular project is no longer expected to reach players.
The footage suggests that the developers were exploring a new direction for the series while retaining familiar characters and elements of its established universe. The leaked material does not establish a release date or confirm that the project had progressed beyond early development.

EA's decision to close BioWare and cancel the project came as a setback for fans awaiting the next installment. The studio was known for its work on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
While the leaked trailer offers a glimpse of what the cancelled game could have become, it remains unclear what direction the franchise will take next. The footage has given fans a look at the project BioWare was developing before its closure, even as its future in gaming remains uncertain.
