Meta is planning to launch a new pair of smart glasses without cameras this fall, according to a report by The Information. The glasses are internally known as Luna and could be unveiled at the company's annual Connect developer conference next week.
The planned launch comes as smart glasses face increasing scrutiny over their ability to record people and surroundings. The camera-free design would set Luna apart from Meta's existing smart glasses models.
Luna is expected to feature six built-in microphones that will let users interact with Meta's AI chatbot. The glasses will also support Muse, Meta's newly launched consumer AI agent, according to The Information. The device will have a side button for quick access to Meta AI. Its speakers are expected to be similar to those used in Meta's current smart glasses.
Meta could introduce Luna at its Connect developer conference, which is scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday. The company is targeting October for shipments, according to the report. Meta had not immediately responded to a request for comment when the report was published.
The planned device comes as Meta expands its focus on wearable technology and artificial intelligence. Its existing smart glasses combine audio features and AI functions with cameras, while Luna is expected to remove the recording capability.
The camera-free approach could also address some privacy concerns linked to wearable devices that can capture images and video in public settings. The company did not publicly confirm the Luna launch, specifications or shipping plans.
