Meta has introduced 'Instants', a new feature that lets users share their social lives via private, temporary content. The new feature enables Meta to compete directly with Snapchat and BeReal as the company increases its focus on casual communication.

The feature enables users to send photos that disappear through Instagram's messaging system. The images will disappear after one view or after 24 hours, based on the selected viewing option. Meta introduced the feature to help users have more casual, genuine interactions.

Meta Rolls Out ‘Instants’ For Instagram

Instagram ‘Instants’ works inside direct messages through its special camera shortcut. Users can capture and send photos instantly to close friends or mutual followers. The system displays replies and emoji reactions within chats, maintaining their connection to Instagram's current direct messaging system.

Unlike Stories, the new feature does not focus on polished edits. Users cannot apply heavy filters or stickers before sharing images. The platform promotes authentic, unedited experiences that mimic how Snapchat and BeReal present content.

Meta has added screenshot alerts, together with screen-recording protection, to improve user privacy. Users can unsend photos before recipients open them, adding another layer of control.

The Roadmap Ahead

Meta is reportedly testing a separate Instants app in select markets. The app functions as an independent platform that starts with its camera feature and connects to both Instagram user accounts and their chat threads. The move mirrors Snapchat’s camera-first approach and reflects Meta’s broader effort to increase user engagement through private interactions instead of public feeds.

The tech giant has previously borrowed successful formats from competitors. Instagram Stories was inspired by Snapchat, while Reels was a response to TikTok’s short-video boom. The launch comes as social media habits continue to evolve. Younger audiences prefer closed-group communication and temporary sharing over permanent posts.
