Microsoft has asked its employees to stop using Anthropic’s newly launched Claude Fable 5 AI model. The decision comes after the tech giant raised concerns related to the model’s data storage methods. The restriction is internal and does not affect customer-facing deployments.
Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 is one of the most advanced models to date. The model is a part of the Anthropic Mythos AI series and was launched this week.
According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft has not added Claude Fable 5 to the internal version of GitHub Copilot that employees use for work. Other Claude models are available because they operate under Zero Data Retention (ZDR) rules, which do not store prompts or responses.
The problem involves how Claude Fable 5 uses its users' data. Reportedly, Anthropic retains all prompts and responses for 30 days for monitoring purposes. Any data flagged as a security issue will be retained for up to 2 years.
Microsoft is currently reviewing internally whether its practices comply with the company’s own security standards. Until the review process concludes, employees have been advised against using this particular AI model.
This ban is quite unexpected, given Microsoft's extensive involvement in AI development initiatives. The tech giant has distinguished between providing AI services to customers and allowing employees to use them with sensitive internal information.
The company applies stricter standards when employees use AI systems that may interact with sensitive internal information. However, Claude Fable 5 is accessible to customers via Microsoft channels despite the ban on its use by employees.
This incident illustrates an emerging trend in enterprise AI systems. The key criteria in this regard involve privacy and compliance considerations. Microsoft’s move signals that enterprise trust may soon become as critical as raw model intelligence in determining which AI platforms gain widespread adoption.
