OpenAI rolls out Codex support to the ChatGPT mobile app. This update will allow developers to monitor and manage coding workflows directly from smartphones. The feature is now available in preview for both iOS and Android.
The move expands OpenAI’s AI coding tool beyond desktop environments and gives developers extra flexibility while they're working remotely.
The new integration lets users track active coding sessions through the ChatGPT app. Developers can look at generated code, keep an eye on what’s going on, and approve commands without having to open a laptop at all.
They can also view terminal logs, take screenshots, scrutinize code diffs, and check test results straight from their phones. The app enables switching between AI models and can start new coding tasks.
OpenAI said the mobile app works like a side interface for Codex agents running on linked systems. The real coding environment keeps running on a connected desktop or a remote machine. Files, permissions, and credentials stay stored there, not on the smartphone.
OpenAI stated in a release, “The mobile version can help developers in several real-world situations. Users can start debugging an issue while away from their desk, approve a coding decision during travel, or quickly prepare summaries and briefings before meetings.”
This rollout comes as a part of OpenAI’s wider effort to beef up its AI developer ecosystem, not just one-off features but more of a steady push that builds momentum.
Right now, the update is being introduced across supported regions for iPhone, iPad, and Android folks. To get the feature, you just need to have the latest update of both the ChatGPT mobile app and the Codex desktop application.
