A sudden technical glitch has exposed the dependence of daily life on digital government infrastructure. Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is receiving a massive number of user complaints due to failed access to its app and website. Residents are unable to complete essential vehicle-related services. From registration renewals to fine payments, routine transactions have been stalled for several days, triggering frustration among motorists.

Digital Breakdown Hits Core Services

Key services, including vehicle registration renewals, driver's license processing, inspection bookings, and payment of fines, have been significantly impacted. Users reported repeated errors while attempting to log in or complete transactions through both the RTA app and website. The issue is highlighting the risks of over-reliance on digital-only systems for critical public infrastructure.

Residents Report Delays and Financial Stress

Several users have turned to social platforms to voice their difficulties. A resident, Rasheed MK, said he has been attempting to renew his vehicle registration for five days without success.

“My registration has already expired,” he said. “I have done the vehicle fitness test at Tasjeel in Al Qusais, but I am not able to renew it either at the self-service desk or through my phone,” he added further, explaining that he was also unable to clear pending fines. “I have been trying for days and don’t want to get fined.” Others reported facing similar issues of error messages preventing the completion of transactions.

The Bigger Picture

The authority acknowledged complaints on X and requested users to share personal details via direct messages to help with troubleshooting. It also noted that the issue is temporary and that technical teams are actively working to find a solution.

The incident shows a growing contradiction in smart city infrastructure. Digital platforms like RTA’s systems are designed for efficiency, but even a short technical glitch can create widespread operational paralysis. This highlights the need for resilient backup systems that help streamline workflows during such disruptions.
