Sony's upcoming PS5 Prism Collection has drawn mixed reactions from PlayStation fans. Many questions are being raised about the colors used in its new transparent DualSense controllers. The debate mainly centers on Flare Orange and Graphite Grey, which some users say look different from their official names.
Sony announced the collection on October 28. It includes three transparent DualSense controllers and matching PS5 console covers in Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray. The designs bring back the see-through electronics style popular during the late 1990s. One Reddit user summed up the main complaints, saying, ‘the orange is red and the gray is blue.’ Several other users have raised similar questions on social media.
The difference in appearance may come from the transparent materials used in the controllers. Overlapping sections of the shells can create different shades, while lighting can also change how the colors appear.
Sony's design team has explained that these effects were part of the collection's visual approach. Satoshi Aoyagi from the company's Color, Material, and Finish design division said the orange develops a ‘rosy hue’ where the transparent material overlaps.
Sony describes Graphite Gray as a cool-toned storm gray rather than a standard neutral shade. Emerald Green, meanwhile, uses a deep hunter green finish that gains depth through its transparent construction.
The new DualSense controllers will sell for USD 84.99 each, while matching PS5 console covers are priced at USD 74.99. Sony will open pre-orders on November 10. The official launch is scheduled for February 4, 2027. Sony has not described the controllers as limited-quantity products.
The collection has received positive reactions from several fans despite the colour debate. Its availability after launch will be worth watching, as special-edition PlayStation accessories have often attracted strong demand.
